Abstract

The metaverse, a virtual space where users interact through digital avatars, presents new challenges in addressing cross-border cybercrime. The paper explores the legal and jurisdictional gaps in this borderless virtual space, where cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities and traditional legal frameworks struggle to enforce regulations. The urgent need for international cooperation and legal reform is highlighted, with the Draft United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime assessing its potential to standardize global responses to cyber threats. The paper also discusses the challenges of establishing jurisdiction in the metaverse, particularly with the rise of decentralized technologies and virtual currencies. The paper proposes international agreements and adaptable legal standards to address these gaps. The paper also discusses the role of artificial intelligence in combating cybercrime, emphasizing its potential but also raising ethical concerns.
