Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the courts of justice has the potential to revolutionize legal processes, enhancing efficiency, accessibility, and decision-making. However, this technological advancement also brings significant socio-legal implications that must be critically examined. This article explores the benefits and challenges associated with AI in judicial contexts, emphasizing issues of bias, accountability, transparency, and ethics. AI systems, trained on historical data, can inadvertently perpetuate existing societal biases, leading to discriminatory outcomes in sentencing and case management. The opacity of algorithmic decision-making raises concerns about accountability, as stakeholders grapple with questions about responsibility for AI-generated outcomes. Ethical dilemmas also arise, particularly regarding privacy, surveillance, and the potential erosion of civil liberties. Furthermore, the evolving role of legal professionals in this landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of legal education and training to prepare them for collaboration with AI tools. This article argues that while AI offers significant advantages, its integration into the judicial system requires comprehensive regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines to ensure that justice is upheld. A multi-stakeholder approach involving legal experts, technologists, and policymakers is essential to address these socio-legal challenges and foster a just and equitable legal system.
