Abstract
Deepfake technology, characterized by its ability to generate realistic and compelling digital content through machine learning and artificial intelligence, has rapidly emerged as a significant disruptor in various sectors, including the media, entertainment, and politics. While it presents certain innovative opportunities for creativity and storytelling, deepfake technology also raises substantial ethical concerns. This study explores the multifaceted influence of deepfake technology, emphasizing its applications and the consequent ethical dilemmas it introduces. The capability to fabricate images, audio, and video with high fidelity can lead to the erosion of trust in digital media, making it increasingly challenging for individuals and organizations to discern truth from fabrication. Misinformation, manipulation, and the potential harm to individuals’ reputations are pressing issues that demand attention. The ethical challenges extend beyond misinformation; they include questions of consent regarding the use of one’s likeness, privacy violations, and the potential for deepfake content to perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Furthermore, governance and regulatory frameworks are lagging, creating a significant gap in addressing these issues effectively. This paper argues for a comprehensive ethico-legal framework that should guide the development and deployment of deepfake technologies, advocating for greater transparency, accountability, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders. Ultimately, while deepfake technology can be harnessed for positive outcomes, an informed and proactive approach is crucial to mitigate its risks and ensure that it does not undermine societal trust or ethical standards.
